Everyone's invited to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Moomins!

2025 marks eighty years since the first Moomin story. The Moomins are the central characters in a series of books and comic strips by Swedish-speaking Finnish writer and artist Tove Jansson. The Moomin stories were originally written in Swedish. The Moomins are a family of white, round fairy tale characters with large snouts. The carefree and adventurous family live in their round, blue house in the idyllic and peaceful Moominvalley, in harmony with nature. 

In all, nine books were released between 1945 and 1977, together with three picture books and a long series of comic strips. They tell of the Moomins' wondrous adventures and over the years they are joined by other characters. 

Tove Jansson is doubtless one of the best Finnish artists of all time. Her lifework is immeasurably valuable because of the success she made both as a writer, artist and cartoonist. The Moomin books have been translated into over fifty languages and continue to sell globally over 20 million copies annually. In addition to the Moomin books and comics, Tove Jansson has received recognition for her many adult short stories and novels, as well as for her paintings, murals and drawings.

Moomin mugs are extremely collectable with limited editions and new designs being released every year.

This year (2025) the Moomins are celebrating their 80th anniversary. In the very first Moomin story, “The Moomins and the Great Flood”, Moominpappa has been missing for a long time. A flood covers everything under it, leaving creatures without shelter, Moominmamma and Moomintroll included. By getting help and helping others, the family is finally reunited. In a beautiful valley, they find the Moominhouse.

In the stories that followed, the Moominhouse has taken in new family members, residents, visitors, and shelter-seekers. It's a place where everyone is welcome as they are – symbol of the Moomin way of life and the foundation of the Moomin 80 anniversary.
