Louis Poulsen PH 5/4 1/2 Pendant Light.
Louis Poulsen PH 5/4 1/2 Pendant is part of the four-shade system originally designed by Poul Henningsen in 1931, which by design directs most of the light downwards. The 5/4 1/2 includes a trumpet shaped upper shade which provides illumination of the area above the three shades. The shades are made from spun aluminium and painted white to provide uniform light distribution. The PH four-shade light was designed to increase the amount of light emitted horizontally providing greater illumination of walls and shelves than was possible using standard three-shade lights. It was redesigned in 1979 by two Danish architects – Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen. They added a blue shade to reduce any glare issues.
The PH series of lamps consists of 30 lamps, including pendants, floor and table lamps. The original lamp shades were made of metal and painted underside in different colours to produce either diffused warm or cold light, with the glass variants appearing later on which provide an all round light. Poul Henningsen was the first designer to use a scientific approach to his lighting designs and produced some of the most iconic and world renowned designs to the market, most of which are still available today. A true master of Danish lamps and lighting.
